Our Story
Begum Naseem Aurangzed, was the daughter of field Marshal Muhammad Ayub khan, the then president of Pakistan and the daughter-in-law of the then Wali of Swat, his highness Maingul Abdul Haq Jahanzeb and married to Miangul Aurangzeb the Waliahad of the then State of Swat. Begum Naseem recognized this bad social norm and wanted to do something about it in her absolute desire to uplift the lot of the orphan, poor and destitute girls of Swat and taking an inspiration from a visit to a girls orphanage in East Jerusalam in 1967, Begum Naseem Aurangzeb set on the path to create a home for the orphan girls of Swat State and the adjoining areas. With the Wali of Swat as the Parton-in-Chief, a governing board and as the founder/president, Begum Naseem inaugurated MASKAN INSTITUTE in September of 1968. The initial batch of 16 girls, were to be housed, fed, educated and given skills to prepare them for financial and socially independent lives upon graduating from the institute. MASKAN currently houses around 45 girls
Our History!
The princely state of Swat emerged from a 400 year old traditional Pathan tribal society in 1917. The ruler of Swat was known by the title WALI. From its inception the WALI wanted to lift the lot of his people by giving them education and the first boys school was set up in 1922 followed shortly by a girls school in 1926. Through the next four decades although the girls were getting education, the tribal and Pushtoon mind-set did not allow the girls to join the work force and be financially independent. The birth of a boy was celebrated and that of a girl was a moment of indifference at best and sadness at worst. This mindset was still prevalent through the decade of the 1960s. A girl with living parents was marginalized so what to say about an orphan girl, whose best hope was to be a maid in relative’s house of some well to do landlord.

The inspiration!
Begum Naseem recognized the bad social norm in the swat state and wanted to do something about it in her absolute desire to uplift the lot of the orphan, poor and destitute girls of Swat and taking an inspiration from a visit to a girls orphanage in East Jerusalam in 1967, Begum Naseem Aurangzeb set on the path to create a home for the orphan girls of Swat State and the adjoining areas. Maskan Institute was incorporated in 1968 and registered with the social Welfare Department of then Province of West Pakistan with its registered office at the then Hotel Shehrazad in the newly built capital city of Islamabad. The facility to house MASKAN was gifted by the WALI of SWAT and donations were sought and given by organizations such as UNICEF, different Embassies housed in Islamabad, and other charitable organizations. Miangul Aurangzeb and Begum Naseem impressed upon their industrialist friends to give generously. Which they did the basic philosophy of MASKAN was to house, educate, train, capacity build and create awareness in these girls to be able to join the work force after completion of their studies. With this came the confidence which they lacked due to the environment they had come from. Soon the numbers started swelling and to date MASKAN has over 1300 alumni who have gone on to hold jobs and become financially independent. This is no small feat considering the background these girls came from.
Begum Naseem passed away in 2000, but her vision was carried forward by her children with 3 of them on the governing board and her eldest son Miangul Adnan Aurangzeb as the President. After his tragic and untimely demise in May 2022, the responsibility has fallen on the shoulders of Miangul Mahmud Aurangzeb. Maskan is also registered with the Economic Affairs Division of Pakistan as a non-profit charity organization. Presently the strength of grills at Maskan has increased to 50, because of the recent devastating flood in Swat.
